I do think it gives us a bit of a window into what a reader needs at any given time. so interesting. I hope you have a peaceful holiday season to rest and restart. I know it will be hard with your loss, but I hope you can find some peace

Have a restful, peaceful break. The holidays are tough. Especially after a loss still viscerally felt. Much ❤️ to you. Thank you for your posts, I look forward to them. It’s like hearing from an old friend.

I have a thing about people who are compelled to photograph a moment instead of experiencing it. So it is with reading books. I enjoy feeling the page turn, wondering what surprise I will find on the other side of the page, then remembering the sheer pleasure as the book fades into memory. Some I love so much that I buy and I have 70+ years worth of such books. From some books I will extract a sentence or paragraph, even, in one case, a chapter!

Listing all the books I have read would be a bit like taking that photograph. The book would become a trophy of sorts. However, Elizabeth’s post did prompt a discussion with my wife and us reminiscing about a historical novel we read circa thirty years ago called ‘Silk and Stone’ by a Dinah Dean about a Norman seamstress and a Saxon stonemason, set in a place called Waltham Abbey (now part of north London). As a result we have just bought a hardback copy online for all of £7 from a Oxfam charity bookshop, so thank you for the prompt. We will read ‘Silk and Stone’ again and I will let you know if our memories have served us well. Regards Robert Howard.

Elizabeth, thanks for sharing your list of books you read during 2021. I'm so sorry for your loss, as I too experienced a loss early in 2021 that made reading a chore sometimes and a lifesaver the rest of the time. I found a couple of books on your reading list that I added to my TBR. I also enjoyed the list of your reader's books from a prior newsletter. I love looking at what others read; that is why my TBR is so enormous. Thank you for the kind words and for sharing my newsletter with your readers. Readers are just the best people ever. I appreciate you. :)

Betsy invited me to share this list with you all after I shared it with her. For many years, I have completed the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge as part of my annual reading. Here is the link to the challenge for 2022. I'll definitely be adding books to meet this challenge next year. https://bookriot.com/read-harder-2022/
