How has keeping secrets affected my life? Profoundly. Molestation, rape ... I even kept one of my children secret after he was kidnapped by his father and I couldn't see him, couldn't get him back ... I just pretended I'd never had a child. Later I came out as a lesbian. I couldn't keep that secret even though many in the community did hide their true selves.
Philyaw's collection is at once small (meticulously observed) and HUGE (by way of impact). She's the BOMB. Don't try to fight her but instead go with the flow. It'll be well worth your time. If Deesha Philyaw ever decides to form a cult, I will sign up for it. I will fight to become her disciple. Against her wishes. Just so you know. Prepare yourselves.
So many more books on my TBR stack. This happens every Saturday morning when I read Spark. Thanks Betsy. PS I love your segue from Black History Month to Women's History Month and look forward to the new books I'll learn about next month.
Fine article. Intercessory pray is not a battle but an intimate and heartfelt interaction. It is the nexus of faith. . . . By the way, I really miss New Hampshire syrup.
I loved Philyaw’s book. Each story on its own was so vividly painted for me and the tug in relationships spoke to the difficulty of holding family ties. Great book. I wanted to read something just like it afterwards but could quite decide. I settled on Crying in H Mart which was another wonderful read.

I love this collection so so much. Have you read Anthony Vesna So’s collection? Also very very good.
