Oh wow, that was a lucky guess! But it is an awesome neighborhood. Sounds like a wonderful place for creative community.

Such a gorgeous visit with Jami Attenberg, really enjoyed your take on her novels, which are also faves of mine and it looks like they're faves of a few of us here. I have heard her read here in Columbia, Missouri, at our local book festival, Unbound. As a former San Diegan, your beauty-salon-turned-literary-salon is intriguing! (I imagine it in, say, Golden Hill ... back when I was there in the 90s that would've been the neighborhood!)

Yes, it was in Golden Hill, actually! The perfect place, even well into the 2000's. I think it is gone now. I tried to look it up the other day.

I haven't read Jami, but I certainly will now. I can relate to doing what it takes to get something done and look forward to her memoir to begin with.

I loved "The Middlesteins" and went to see/hear her at a literary thing years ago. Thanks for this informative newsletter!

I am fond of Jami Attenberg. I follow her on twitter and signed up for her newsletter. I have downloaded a couple of her books, but have not read them yet. Thanks for your recommendations.

She has the tenacity and sheer focus I lack for writing. She seems like someone I could be friends with, and that is the draw for me. I will purchase her new book, it sounds intriguing to me.

I’m currently reading The Selected Letters of Wallace Stegner, written by his son after his death. Wallace Stegner is probably my favorite author. Crossing to Safety is my favorite book. It resonates now more with me as I turn 62 😒 I find I’m enjoying books that are written about people my age. Not sure why. But it feels comfortable.

I love this line and its POV: ...the journey I’m making.
